With school about to let out for the year, here’s some startling information
for parents that you’ll want to hear. Florida has the highest number of drowning
related deaths for children under 5 and since May is National Water Safety
Month, first responders want to get the word out on how to play it
safe.
It might seem like a fun day at the pool, but experts said if
you’re not careful that fun could quickly become tragedy.

According to the state health department, enough children to fill three or four preschool
classrooms won’t live to see their fifth birthday and that’s just in Florida.

Last year 45 people drown in Orange County. First responders said half were
children under 5 years old. In the first five months of this year, there have
been 10 drowning deaths.
“Anytime you have kids in the pool, never leave them unattended no matter
what,” said Lt. Eddie Brown from Orange County Fire Rescue.

Lt. Brown said parents should always keep doors leading out to the water
locked and know CPR just in case there’s an emergency.

He also said parents should keep a phone close by when supervising children
in the water.
“A lot of the drownings we have seen with kids, that’s the number one thing
that we hear. The parent got a phone call and they just ran in the house to
answer the phone,” said Brown. “A lot of people also look at drownings as pool
or the beach. But there are a lot of things around the home that also contribute
to drowning deaths.”

In fact, an infant can drown in just one inch of water. So if it's bath time
or not, first responders said never leave any water unattended in your home and
always stay within arm’s reach. Also, you can help by talking to your family and
friends.

“The best way to prevent drowning is to bring awareness to it,” said
Brown.

You can also buy an area entry detector for the pool area. You install it on
the door or gate and whenever someone opens it, an alarm will sound letting you
know if a little one is headed near the water.

Tampa FL- The danger of drowning for young children is ever present in and around the home. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4 years-old and it takes only a few inches of water for a young child to drown. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging parents and caregivers to look for and protect against drowning risks inside and around their homes.
A new CPSC report on in home drownings and non-fatal
submersions (pdf) in products such as bathtubs, buckets, bath seats, toilets, and landscaping features indicates that from 2006 to 2010, there were 684 incidents involving children younger than five-years-old. This figure includes 434 fatalities (an average of 87 per year), 233 injuries, and 17 incidents with no known injuries. Eighty-two percent of the victims were younger than the age of two and 81 percent of the incidents involved bathtubs or bath related products. After pools, bathtubs are the second leading location where young children drown. CPSC's analysis of the fatalities found that 92 percent of the incidents
occurred in residential settings. "Too many young children are drowning," said Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. "Just
as with pools, I urge parents and caregivers to childproof their home and constantly supervise young children around bathtubs, bath seats and buckets. Taking extra safety steps at home can help prevent a tragic drowning."

Of the reported fatalities, 28 percent involved a lapse in supervision, such
as a parent or caregiver leaving the bathroom while the child was in the
bathtub to answer the phone or door, or to retrieve a towel; in 23 percent, the
child was left with another child, usually older; in 10 percent, the child was
found in a product outside the home, such as decorative yard equipment or a
bucket; and another 3 percent were found inside the home in a bucket/container
or trash basket that was being used for cleaning.

CPSC's drowning prevention safety tips include:

Never leave young children alone near any water or tub or basin with fluid.
Young children can drown in even small amounts of liquid.
Always keep a young child within arm's reach in a bathtub. If you must
leave, take the child with you.
Don't leave a baby or young child in a bathtub under the care of another
child.
Never leave a bucket containing even a small amount of liquid unattended.
Toddlers are top heavy and they can fall headfirst into buckets and drown.
After using a bucket, always empty and store it where young children cannot
reach it. Don't leave buckets outside where they can collect rainwater.
Consider placing locks on toilet seat covers in case a young child wanders
into the bathroom.
Learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). It can be a lifesaver when
seconds count.

When can I start my child in swimming lessons in Tampa?

Most professionals believe when a baby is 6 months old, you can start them in a parent and child swimming program. These programs are really for
socialization only. Your child probably won't be developmentally ready for
swimming lessons until age 3 +.
In the meantime, be cautious around water with your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics says: "Whenever infants and toddlers are in or around water, an adult should be within arm's length, practicing 'touch supervision.'"

Your child will be ready for lessons on his own when he's able to listen to an instructor for the whole Swim lesson and follow his directions. He should also be comfortable around water, if he dislikes bathing or hasn't been around the water much, it might be a good idea to take him to a "mommy and me" class first.
A number of health and swimming clubs in Tampa Bay, offer parent and child lessons. Ask your doctor, daycare provider, or other parents to recommend a good program. Try to observe a class before you join. The instructors should run a well-organized class and clearly demonstrate what they're asking parents to do.
Other things to look for: A warm pool, which makes it much less traumatic for your child and more comfortable for you, and a relatively small class so you can hear the teacher and have plenty of room to play in the pool.

CPSC recommends that residential pool and spa owners adopt water safety steps to prevent children from accessing the water when there is no adult supervision, and they are appropriately protected when an adult is available to supervise.
By asking and answering these critical questions, you can gauge the effectiveness of your water safety measures, and determine what steps need to be taken to protect children from drowning and submersion injuries:

Is it safe to take your 5-month-old swimming in a pool? Get water safety tips

Q. Is it safe for us to take our 5-month-old into our backyard
pool with us?
A. If he likes it, there's no reason he can't join in the fun. But your hands
and eyes should be on him at all times when he's in the water. And when he's
near the pool, don't leave him alone, not even for a moment.
If the water feels cool to you, limit his time there so he doesn't get
uncomfortable, and take him out immediately if he starts to shiver, look pale,
or get cranky. Keep his head above the water so the chlorine doesn't sting his eyes. And put a swim diaper on him instead of a regular one; it'll keep you safe if he poops while in the pool. Always bundle him up in a dry towel as soon as he gets out.
Since you own a pool, be sure to follow these safety suggestions from the
American Academy of Pediatrics:

* Surround the pool with a pool fence at least four feet high that locks.

* Keep rescue equipment (like a shepherd's hook or a life preserver) and a
telephone by the pool.

* Remove all toys and other objects from the pool after use so your child
isn't tempted to reach for them.

* Don't rely on flotation devices like wings to keep babies above water --
they're toys, not safety equipment.

2 year old in Seminole near drowning- second child in 3 days!

This is the second near drowning accident in the Tampa bay area this week. A pool fence by pool guard of tampa bay would have protected this child. Thank god he will be ok.

SEMINOLE — A 2-year-old boy was rushed to All Children's Hospital
Monday night after he nearly drowned in the family pool, deputies said.
Chantelle M. Bang, 21, pulled her son, Noah, from the pool around 8 p.m. and administered CPR until paramedics arrived, deputies said.
Noah Bang was in stable condition and expected to be released from the
hospital early Tuesday.
According to deputies, the child was in a back room of the 10875 131st Street N home, playing with his mother and uncle when Chantelle Bang left the room for five minutes. When she returned, neither her son nor his uncle were in the room, deputies said.
She found Noah floating in the backyard pool, which has no safety fence
around it, deputies said.
It is believed Noah exited the house through the garage and made his way to
the pool before his mother found him.
The investigation is ongoing.

The truth is, there are many scam artists on Craigslist ready to sell you a low quality pool fence, only to install it poorly, while using the wrong equipment. This leaves you with a false sense of security and an unsafe Pool Fence.
