The truth is, there are many scam artists on Craigslist ready to sell you a low quality pool fence, only to install it poorly, while using the wrong equipment. This leaves you with a false sense of security and an unsafe Pool Fence. I have done numerous pool fence repairs over the years for people who "Were just trying to save a buck" and got totally ripped off. They told me “The Company looked legitimate” and “They frequently placed ads on Craigslist so I thought they were ok.” I ask them: 1. Did you check with the Better Business Bureau? 2. Did you check Angie’s List? 3. Did they show you current Liability Insurance? Answer: No, No and No. Before you trust your child’s safety to the cheapest company around, please do your homework! ![]() Pool Guard Fences Help Keep Kids Safe By Kevin Post Summer heat means spending time out of doors and in our swimming pools. But to make sure that your little ones don’t attempt an unsupervised dip in the family pool, consider installing a Pool Guard - pool safety fence. Pool Guard of Tampa Bay provides quality swimming pool safety fences that keep kids away from unsupervised pools. In their 15-year history, Pool Guard has installed more than 75,000 fences nationwide. Pool Guard of Tampa Bay has been serving the greater Tampa Bay area for over 5 years. Why consider a Pool Guard fence? Accidents can happen very quickly, even when one or both parents are home. Each year, more than 300 children die nationwide as a result of accidental drowning, and thousands more are treated in emergency rooms. In Florida, drowning is the number one cause of death in children under 5. In response to these incidents, Florida enacted the Residential Pool Barrier Code in 2002. This statute requires that new pool owners either build a barrier around the pool, or install a home security system with an exit alarm on each door or window leading to the pool area. Most people building new swimming pools today choose to install removable pool safety fences with self closing pool gates to keep their families safe. With a Pool Guard pool fence, you can rest assured that your children are protected by a quality product. “We only use top quality, American made products. That includes our premium interlocking mesh, the strongest mesh available on the market today. Pool Guard of Tampa Bay provides a 48-hour turnaround between consultation and installation, and offers free estimates. Recent Swimming Pool Safety Statistics- Clearwater FL The National Safety Council reports that 330 children and adults drown annually in home swimming pool. Each year, headlines note the deaths of infants and children who tumble into pools and drown because a gate was left open or they otherwise were able to gain access to a pool when no one was around to save them. Swimming alone or without adult supervision also leads to many drownings. Although many pool accidents are related to running and roughhousing, numerous injuries also are attributed to the pool, its accessories and general environment. A Tampa Pool Fence - Pool Guard of Clearwater, Tampa, St. Petersburg, FL recommends a number of precautionary measures to reduce home pool hazards. 1. There should be a Pool Fence at least four feet high around all sides of the pool (please check your local code requirements; as state/county laws may vary) with a locked Pool Safety Gate to keep children out when there is no supervision. The Pool Safety Fence should be constructed so it’s difficult to climb. Lawn furniture, trees and shrubs should not be close enough to provide an easy boost over the Pool Fence. 2. The steps of the Swimming pool ladder should be at least three inches wide, and the ladder should have handrails on both sides small enough for a child to grasp. 3. There should be a ladder at both ends of the swimming pool. 4. Electrical equipment should be installed by a licensed electrician in accordance with local safety codes. Ground-fault circuit interrupters are now recommended for pool area installations. 5. Check with a reputable pool contractor to be sure the depth is sufficient for a diving board or slide. Always put a slide in a deep area of the pool-- never in shallow water. See WWW.ATampaPoolFence.com for more information A recent research paper written by our State Health Department titled: Correlation of Pool Drowning Deaths With Number of Residential Swimming Pools by County in Florida, 2005-2007 Michael Lo, Kristal Hall, Lisa VanderWerf-Hourigan, Bob Vincent, and Robert Pryor has quite a bit of information to put toddler drowning deaths into perspective; especially for Hillsborough County FL; Tampa has a large number of residential pools which is correlated with an increased incidence of toddler pool drowning; Making toddler drowning deaths somewhat predictable. We know every year we will loose children. Some Quotes from the paper: Statistical modeling showed that for every 10,000 residential pools that a County has, 2.4 additional pool drowning deaths can be expected to occur over Three years. This relationship was therefore determined to be linearly correlated. Greater public health impact may be achieved by focusing drowning prevention Efforts, especially among young children, in counties with more residential pools; And thus a greater risk of pool drowning Of the 120 young children ages one to four who drowned in confirmed, single-family Residential swimming pools, 82 (68.3%) drowned in a pool at their own Home; nine (7.5%) drowned in a pool at a grandparent, uncle, or other relative’s Home; five (4.2%) drowned in a pool at a friend’s home; five (4.2%) drowned in a Pool at a neighbor’s home; and one (0.8%) each drowned in a pool at a babysitter’s Home, a summer home, or a vacation rental house. Sixteen (13.3%) drowned in a Pool at a home of another or an unspecified individual.
